Three prison officers are recovering from stab wounds after an Attica inmate attacked them with a homemade knife.
The incident happened at the maximum security prison in New York Thursday as officers were taking inmates to a mess hall for dinner.
State corrections spokesman Jim Flateau says 23-year-old Shondell Paul sprung at an officer from his cell and stabbed him in the chest and back, then stabbed two officers who tried to subdue him. Four other officers restrained and handcuffed the inmate.
The three injured officers were taken to a hospital. Correction officers' union president Richard Harcrow said the injuries didn't appear to be life threatening.
Flateau said there were 55 assaults on staff at the maximum security prison last year, down from 90 in 1999.
