| Ohio Governor to Sell 2 prisons in Grafton |

COLUMBUS — Gov. John Kasich’s plan to sell Grafton Correctional Institute and North Coast Correctional Treatment Facility in Grafton as a package deal will cause the loss of local jobs and spark anger among prison employees. There is no proposal to sell Lorain Correctional Institute, a maximum security prison. Kasich, who made the announcement as a part of his budget, also wants to sell North Central Correctional Institution in Marion; Lake Erie Correctional Institution in Conneaut; and a juvenile prison in Marion that closed in 2009. Six-month early retirement will be offered to about 100 eligible employees at Grafton and North Coast, and unions will be able to collectively bargain for how other positions will be filled, according to Gary C. Mohr, director of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections. Those with seniority will be able to bump less experienced guards at other state facilities, and jobs will be available at private facilities for those bumped from the public sector — most likely those not vested in the state pension system, according to Ohio Associated Press reports from the budget unveiling. Bobbie Peters, AFSCME union chapter president and account clerk in GCI’s business office, said prison and union officials heard word of the plan to sell the prison last week.
