I have been following all the complaints about the “bloated benefits packages” for public employees, particularly about the local corrections officer who will collect more per year when retired than he did when working. What the complainers do not mention is what he had to do to receive such compensation. He must have worked double shifts and days off for three years in some of the most dangerous work environments imaginable – no time for family, and always watching your back. How was he able to work so many hours? Because despite the “overly generous” benefits, there was and probably still is a shortage of corrections officers.
