As many as 20 adult prisoners approaching release will soon be seen tending the grounds of the Woodland Center Correctional Facility in Green Oak Township. The correctional facility for adult men is on the southern side of M-36 across the street from the refurbished Maxey Training School. State Department of Corrections officials said the prisoners — who will be visible off M-36 — will wear orange T-shirts that read "Prisoner" on the back and blue pants so they are easily identifiable by motorists and passers-by. Most of the 20 prisoners will be working on the campus. Ten of the Level 1 prisoners were expected to arrive last week at the Woodland facility, and another 10 at a date yet to be determined. "It's OK for them to be outside," Woodland Warden Joan Roggenbuck said at last week's Community Liaison Committee meeting. "You will be able to see them from the road," Roggenbuck added. The new inmates won't be classified as being mentally ill, Roggenbuck said. The current 130 higher-security adult males at the Woodland facility are classified as having mental illnesses. Department of Corrections Officer Daniel Godfrey said he has run similar work crews in other parts of the state. "They're not just going to be out wandering," Godfrey explained. Both juvenile and adult male inmates from the Maxey campus have done outdoor work in the past without incident, said Township Supervisor Mark St. Charles. St. Charles said the campus has beefed up its security enough to make sure such programs run smoothly. He said the township's emergency services continue to work well with Maxey campus security. "I think they've got the checks and balances in place that would offer the right amount of security to the residents of the area," he said. Read More. |
