Most expensive earthquake in Japan

The magnitude-9 earthquake and tsunami that rocked northeastern part of Japan is the most expensive quake ever as according to the government, it has caused up to 25 trillion yen ($309 billion) damage.

The government estimated 16 trillion to 25 trillion yen in direct damage to houses, factories and social infrastructure from the March 11 disaster.

The estimated cost was much larger than the 9.6 trillion yen of losses caused by the 1995 Kobe earthquake in western Japan, which killed more than 6,400 people and was not followed by a tsunami.

The government also expected the economy to contract by up to 0.5 percent in the coming fiscal year, which begins April 1, because of the disaster.

"We must keep in mind that because of the earthquake, production could slow down over an extensive area and for a lengthy period," Economic and Fiscal Policy Minister Kaoru Yosano said. Such a drop was sure to also hit exports.

The government estimate did not include the effects of continuing power outages caused by a nuclear power plant being taken offline by the disaster in Fukushima, 250 km northeast of Tokyo. The cooling systems of its six reactors failed, causing overheating cores and the threat of reactor meltdowns.

It was far from the only infrastructure to be damaged. The tsunami and quake, the strongest ever recorded in Japan, damaged 1,450 roads and 51 bridges and triggered 120 landslides, the National Police Agency said.

It also raised the toll in the disaster to a confirmed 9,452 deaths while the number of missing stood at 14,715.

A series of aftershocks hit the disaster zone on the northeastern coast onWednesday.

The initial magnitude-9 quake has been followed by a record number of aftershocks. An earthquake registering magnitude 6 struck at 7.12 a.m. (2212 GMT Tuesday). No tsunami warning following the tremor.

Other, less powerful tremors followed in Fukushima and Ibaraki prefectures, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said the quakes did not further damage the stricken nuclear power plant in Fukushima.
