The carefully planned robbery and beating were supposed to be payback for stealing pills and cash from a drug dealer. But there was a glitch. When police apprehended the first of four men charged in the Severna Park ambush, he admitted that they'd robbed the wrong man, said Anne Arundel County prosecutor Michael J. Dunty. On Tuesday, Brian Keith Andrzejewski, 35, pleaded guilty to robbery. Circuit Judge Paul A. Hackner sentenced him to four years in prison, followed by five years of supervised probation, while the victim, a community college student, and his family, watched. "I tried to tell them I think they've got the wrong person, but I think at that point, they didn't listen," said 22-year-old Michael Hughes, recalling that he feared for his life during a beating in front of his family's home. Andrzejewski, who was on probation for assaulting a Giant supermarket worker when he robbed Hughes, apologized Tuesday. His attorney said that he was no longer a member of the violent prison gang Dead Man Inc, and that he feared for his safety in prison. Last Sept. 7, Andrzejewski and three younger men met in the parking lot by the Glory Days Grill in Glen Burnie. The plot, crafted after Andrzejewski was contacted by the wronged drug dealer, called for Donald Lee Sutherland to arrange to meet the man who'd stolen from the dealer, Dunty said. Andrzejewski — described by Dunty as the "muscle" for the drug dealer — and the others would jump the man. But on the night of Sept. 9, as they waited near Andrzejewski's Pasadena home, they suspected a neighbor saw them. They followed a car they'd seen, thinking that the driver was their target. When the driver got out, they beat and robbed him, Dunty said. A man, believed to be Andrzejewski, pulled Hughes off the ground by the hair and said, "Look at me, and open your eyes. Do you know who I am? I am DMI," Dunty said. Hughes dragged himself into his parents' home and collapsed on the living room floor, covered in dirt and blood. His mother called 911 and recalled Tuesday that she didn't know if his left eye socket was intact. Hughes' attackers returned to the neighborhood the next day, looking for Andrzejewski's lost knife, Dunty said. A neighbor jotted down the license plate number, which led police to Andrzejewski.
