The Lackawanna County prison board is getting down to the nitty-gritty in its search for a permanent warden. Members of the seven-peron board are preparing to individually interview up to three finalists recommended by search committee headed by Interim Warden Vincent Mooney, board chairman and county Commissioner Corey O'Brien said Wednesday. "Every member of the prison board will have the opportunity to meet with them," Mr. O'Brien said after the board's meeting at the prison on North Washington Avenue. "We want to make sure there is full participation by each member of the board and a level of comfort before we make any decisions." The finalists have not been publicly identified. The new warden will replace Janine Donate, who resigned in November amid fallout from a brutal inmate-on-inmate assault at the jail last summer. Mr. Mooney, deputy superintendent at the State Correctional Institution at Dallas, has been overseeing the prison on an interim basis while on loan from the state Department of Corrections. The finalists emerged from a list of 22 candidates winnowed down after two preliminary rounds of interviews conducted by the search committee, which also included Joseph Piazza, warden at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility, and Nancy Giroux, superintendent of SCI Muncy. Mr. O'Brien said there is no timetable for naming a new warden but expects a decision to be made "over the next few prison board meetings." The board's next regular meeting is scheduled Wednesday, April 27. Read More. |
