| Teen gets 22yrs in prison in gang stabbing |

A teenager who pleaded guilty to fatally stabbing a man during a street fight in Escondido last year was sentenced to 22 years in prison Thursday. Jose Luis Garcia Jr., 17, was tried as an adult in the Nov. 27 stabbing that killed Martin Melendez-Ramos, 18, of Escondido. Garcia, who is not a documented gang member, pleaded guilty last month in Vista Superior Court to voluntary manslaughter and also admitted to using a deadly weapon in the attack and committing the crime for the benefit of a gang. Prosecutors said Garcia confronted a group of teens on Norway Court near East Park Avenue shortly after midnight by asking where they were from — an understood gang challenge.
