Muskegon prison expected to close

A prison in western Michigan is expected to close in the coming months after word that a deal with Pennsylvania to house prisoners from that state is coming to an end, the warden said.

Muskegon Correctional Facility staffers have been told the facility will close by the beginning of June, Warden Michael Curley told The Muskegon Chronicle. The medium-security prison currently employs about 200 people. Some workers are expecting to transfer to vacant positions at other prisons.

"They want everything done and out by June 1," Curley said.

The Muskegon prison houses more than 1,000 inmates from Pennsylvania under a contract with the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections. Pennsylvania last month told Michigan officials that they planned to cancel the arrangement announced in December 2009.

The contract had been expected to run for five years, and it saved the Muskegon prison from a previously scheduled January 2010 closing. But Pennsylvania officials invoked a clause that allowed them to cancel the arrangement with a 180-day notice because they no longer needed Michigan's prison space.

"It's devastating," said Tom Tylutki, president of the Michigan Corrections Organization, which represents corrections workers. "There's a mixed bag of emotions among the officers. They're on a roller coaster ride."

Michigan is trying to work out what to do with the facility, Curley said. Muskegon County officials have been exploring the possibility of moving county jail inmates into part of the state prison.
