Five current and former officers at a Tenn. county jail were indicted July 23 in a federal investigation into abuse of inmates, including one who died. Two jailers were accused of fatally attacking an inmate in January 2003 and then denying him prompt medical attention. The counts related to the assault carry a maximum penalty of life in prison. The indictment also alleges the officers conspired to assault inmates, and covered up their conduct by filing false reports and charges. Jerry Gonzalez, a lawyer who represents people who have been abused by jailers, said the charges are "a step in the right direction." However, "I think the list (of those indicted) should be larger," he said. A telephone call to Wilson County Sheriff Terry Ashe was not immediately returned. Four other former officers previously pleaded guilty to felony charges arising from the investigation. |
