Prisoners 'pay to stay'

Van Buren County Detention Center is making prisoners "pay to stay".

Ordinance No. 2011-9 permits charging inmates $15 per day for their stay in the county jail.

A second ordinance on inmate health care was unanimously approved by the panel. Ordinance 2011-10 requires inmates to pay a $20 co-pay for any prisoner-initiated medical services, $10 for prescription drugs, and the full cost of any over-the-counter drugs.

"Just like me and you when we go on insurance, they pay a co-pay," Jail Administrator Randy Murray says. However, a prisoner can't be denied health care if they can't pay.

Murray says the county did this to cut costs."With the high cost of housing prisoners and the high cost of medical for prisoners, with this program we could recoup that money."

Of the three counties in Arkansas that implement the "pay for stay," Van Buren is actually the lowest per day per stay dollar amount at $15 per day. Conway County pay to stay will cost you $25 and Boone County is the most expensive "pay to stay" with inmates paying $35 a day.

Prisoners will pay $20 for copay, $10 for prescription drugs and pay full cost for over the counter drugs. That money can be taken from their commissary account.
