A 31-year-old Chandler transient faces 17 graffiti-tagging counts following a chase and apprehension in a stolen car case, Chandler police said Wednesday.

Avery Lee Cooper, an Arizona-born Chandler man, faces four other counts related to car theft and drug paraphernalia, police said.

Cooper has been spraying gang graffiti all over a two-mile area of downtown Chandler for the past nine months, police said in a report.

"He has sprayed his moniker Base and 'ST' for Santan Bloods as well as his sect name of 'NBSK' sect in over 18 different locations on different dates since August of 2010," the police report says.

On March 23, Cooper was spotted driving a car that had been reported stolen on March 11, police said. A patrol officer who had knowledge of the stolen car followed the silver Buick as it turned west on Ray Road from Arizona Avenue. The car sped up, turned south on Iowa Street and went through public alleys. The officer activated emergency lights and siren and reported a fleeing vehicle, the report says.

As the driver veered into the left turn lane to head south on Alma School Road, he turned directly in front of oncoming traffic, nearly causing an accident, police said.

Cooper turned into an apartment complex alley off Alma School, bailed from the car and took off on foot, police said.

He fled through a neighborhood then northbound on Pleasant Drive, before police caught him at the intersection of Pleasant and Monterey Street. He had a glass pipe with white residue, and told police he is an addict who smokes $40 a day wroth of methamphetamines and has no job to finance this $280 a week habit.

The car belongs to the parents of a friend of his, he told police. The friend let him use the car and he drove it for two weeks with no intention of returning it, he told police. One officer noticed something on him that bore his moniker, Base, and connected Cooper with the multiple tagging calls on the city's Graffiti hotline number, which is (480) 782-4322.
