With a sterling soundtrack of classic ’60s sounds, a lofty pedigree from Oliver Sacks and a cast topped by Lou Taylor Pucci, J.K. Simmons and Julia Ormond, “The Music Never Stopped” should pack a wallop.

Instead this fact-inspired story from the physician who gave us “Awakenings” mostly plays like a Lifetime movie.

In a sad variation on the prodigal son, Gabriel Sawyer (Pucci) is reunited with his parents after a 20-year estrangement. But a tumor has left him permanently brain-damaged, costing him his memory.

Henry Sawyer (Simmons) and his mostly silent wife (Cara Seymour) are happy to have their son back, even if he is in a long-term care facility and Gabriel will never fathom that 20 years have passed.

Through music therapy with Ormond’s Dianne Daley, bits of his teenage life return. Flashbacks reveal how a confrontation with his father was the lightning bolt that sent this ’60s anti-Vietnam War protester and budding musician out into the world just months before his high school graduation.

A saga of loss and reconciliation, “Music” focuses on Henry’s belated awareness of the pain he caused, the lives ruined. Simmons, who established himself as a versatile, dependable supporting player as a fearsome racist prison gang leader in “Oz” and is a regular on “The Closer” as a kindly L.A. cop, gets a rare leading role here.

He’s first-rate in showing Henry as a steel rod that learns to bend and discovers that if he is to ever have a “conversation” with his only child, he will have to listen and learn the lyrics to the Grateful Dead catalog.
