G4S to take over at Birmingham prison |

The army may have to be brought in if prison officers at HMP Birmingham go on strike following the announcement that the private contractor G4S is to take over management of the 1,450-inmate prison from October, the Justice Secretary Ken Clarke has said. The decision follows an investigation into the failing prison by Clarke's predecessor, Labour's Jack Straw. The company is also to run the new 1,600-place Featherstone 2 prison in Wolverhampton from April 2012 while Doncaster prison – currently managed mostly by Serco – will become the first to be run on a "payment by results" system. Serco's 90 per cent share of the contract will increase if it succeeds in stopping ex-offenders from returning to prison for an agreed period. Clarke said: "Public protection is not just about how we manage prisons in order to punish people. It is also about how we achieve genuine and long-lasting reductions in crime, by cutting reoffending."
