| Consolidate State Prison Dairy Farms? |

Wisconsin's two top legislative leaders say plans to consolidate a couple of dairy farms run by inmates at the Waupun and Fox Lake prisons have been scrapped mainly for environmental reasons. Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald from Juneau and Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald of Horicon announced that the Department of Corrections indicated they do not intend to proceed with the project on lands within the Fox Lake Correctional Institute after local property owners raise concerns about the damage to water quality. The proposed site, which would have also included a manure digester, is located on a Fox Lake tributary and would have heightened the existing nitrogen levels, according to the Fitzgerald brothers. "This project would have severely affected the water quality of Fox Lake and caused considerable environmental damage to property owners in my district," said Senate Majority Leader Fitzgerald. The project was originally enumerated in the 2009-2011 capital budget and approved in the last budget bill. Construction on the farm was going to start last summer, but the project never reached beyond the planning stages as a result of the concerns raised by local property owners regarding the water quality of Fox Lake. Meanwhile, the Republican leaders are catching flack from supporters for allowing the idea to fall apart. Assembly Democrat Brett Hulsey of Madison, who is also a former executive with the Sierra Club, says the Fitzgeralds may have decided to pull the project to gain support for their election bids last year.
