Cheyenne – Sigma Alpha Iota (SAI) International Music Fraternity has recognized the work of Lucas “Luke” Owens, an inmate at the Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution in Torrington. Owens was recognized for his extraordinary work as a music braillist and for his recent completion of the conversion of the Centennial Supplement to the Songs of Sigma Alpha Iota. “This was an especially challenging book because it includes music for a variety of instruments,” said, Karen Gearreald, Director of Services for Musicians with Special Needs for Sigma Alpha lota and Braille Music Advisor to the Library of Congress. “Luke seeks to format and organize each transcription in a way that will be most understandable to the braille reader,” she said. “Luke is also distinguished by his tenacity, his resourcefulness, his good humor, and his desire for perfection.” Encouraged by Allison Marshall, vocational supervisor at Wyoming State Penitentiary, Owens completed the braille music course in 2008. After being housed out of state for two years with no opportunity to convert music to braille, he was transferred to the Wyoming Medium Correctional Institute in Torrington in 2010. Upon transfer, Owens again fell under the supervision of Marshall, who is now the Braille Supervisor in the vocational and industries program at WMCI. Owens celebrated his return to music by transcribing the SAI supplemental songbook. He is now working on various musical projects, including a dictionary of foreign musical terms. Some of his work has already been submitted for archiving and distribution at the Library of Congress and more items will be ready soon. |
