The Alabama Department of Corrections claims the inmate disturbance at Holman Prison is under control Tuesday afternoon, after inmates were acting up and reportedly attempting to take control of the facility earlier in the day.

A news release from the Alabama Department of Corrections claims the inmate disturbance is now under control.

According to the writeup from Brian Corbett, the issues started around 7:30am. Inmates took control of a location called "A-dorm" at Holman.

"For safety reasons, Holman supervisors ordered officers out of the dorm and into the hallway," the news release states. "No initial injuries or destruction of property were reported. The dorm houses approximately 115 inmates, not all of whom participated in the standoff."

ADOC’s Correctional Emergency Response Team arrived on the scene equipped with riot gear, but the inmates continued to act up.

"Initial attempts at compliance were refused. At approximately 11:15 a.m., CERT, under the direction of Institutional Coordinator Grantt Culliver, entered and regained control of the dorm with no injury to staff. There were few minor injuries to inmates who refused lawful orders, none requiring off-site medical treatment."

Response teams from the CERT will remain on the premises as needed. The cause of the disturbance remains under investigation.

Several friends of prison guards, prisoners, and relatives of prisoners have contacted the News 5 newsroom concerned about a potential riot at the Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore.

Holman Prison is located on Highway 21 about nine miles north of Atmore.

The reports started coming in around 9:00 am and have been consistent throughout the morning. The callers are concerned about the safety of the inmates and staff if disturbances continue to escalate.

Friends and relatives claim the inmates are upset about the living conditions inside the prison.

News 5 has contacted the Department of Corrections, Escambia County Sheriff's Office and Atmore Police, but authorities cannot confirm these reports. We have a News 5 crew on the way to the scene, and will continue to update this web story as we hear more information.
