Business is bustling these days at Edie's Log Bar in Baldwin, with the GEO Group turning the shuttered former youth facility into its latest prison to house California inmates on a contract basis. Just the construction – and construction workers – has been a boon. “It is bringing a lot more business,” waitress Sierra Cox said. But, she said, there is concern, too. Many still remember when the former Michigan Youth Correctional Facility shut down in 2005. They also know the disappointment when a federal contract to house illegal immigrants fell through last spring. “People are worried that it's going to start up and close down like it did before,” she said. The GEO Group is putting $60 million into the project, with a $60-million-a-year contract with California to house 2,580 inmates during the next four years. The company says the prison is still expected to open in May. A recent hire raised concerns because he was told that Monday's training had been postponed without explanation. Given California's budget problems, the news was unsettling. He had concerns, too, because California entered into the contract while Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was in office. Jerry Brown has taken his place. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said the training was pushed back because of the state's budget problems. “The training was not handled because of our severe budget issues,” spokeswoman Cassandra Hockenson said. “Right now, California is in dire budget crisis. So it has not been done, but it will be done. I cannot tell you specifically when it will be done.” In a statement released Tuesday, GEO Group said: "We continue to work towards a May intake of California prisoners. For security reasons, we cannot provide any further details related to the facility activation at this time."
