| Corrections Officer Promises Jailbreak For Drugs and Cash |

RIKERS ISLAND, NY (PIX11) -- For 21 years Rikers Island corrections officer Robert Whitfield was in charge of monitoring prisoners at Rikers Island, but Wednesday night a corrections officer will be watching over him. Investigators say he was caught plotting to free an inmate, in exchange for $20,000 and 3 kilos of cocaine. His attorney says Whitfield was a model employee, never missing a day of work at Rikers Island in twenty years. "This is the first case of this sort that we've seen." said Rose Gill Hearn NYC Department of Investigations Commissioner. "I find it so blatant and foolish." Investigators say Whitfield is the one who approached an inmate who was waiting to be sentencing on drug charges in the George Motchan Detention Center. According to police, the inmate reported Whitfield. "It was just a promise that he can do it because he has this position at Rikers Island," said DEA Associate Special Agent In Charges James Hunt. Department of Corrections Commissioner Dora Schriro told PIX 11 News, "This Department has zero tolerance for any employee who compromises his or her position in any way, or jeopardizes the safety and security of staff or inmates.
