VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) - Convicted child molesters in Indiana must serve 85 percent of their prison sentence. What about murderers? They can serve less time, 50 percent of their sentence, by law. Right now, violent felons can get "good time" in prison, meaning if you follow the rules you serve just half of your sentence. "We are out of prison capacity, we have taken steps internally and we have really completely used all of our prison resources," Indiana Department of Corrections Deputy Commissioner Randy Koester said. Lawmakers are debating just making the prison sentences longer for violent crimes. Modesitt said the best thing for Wabash Valley jails and prisons is to re-evaluate drug offender sentences.
