Detroit— Wayne County has struck a tentative deal with Greektown Casino-Hotel to buy land for a new county jail in downtown Detroit. The 7.6-acre site, which is now a parking lot, is bounded by Interstate 375, Gratiot and St. Antoine, said county officials. County Executive Robert Ficano said the deal would reduce operational costs by consolidating three jails and limiting the distance inmates travel to court. "We're pleased with the location," he said. "It would save a lot of money." County officials have said the new jail could save the county more than $20 million a year. Before the deal becomes official, Wayne County and Greektown are doing due diligence for 60 days. The Wayne County Commission also must approve the move. Commissioner Ilona Varga echoed Ficano's comments, praising the site for its proximity to the 3rd Circuit Court. "It makes a lot of sense," she said about the deal. "I believe, in the long run, we're going to save a lot of money." Varga and Ficano said they believed the entire commission would approve the transaction. Ficano told the board about it Monday. In November, the commission voted 11-3 to issue $300 million in bonds to build a jail. Terms of the deal call for the county to give Greektown $10 million and 1.2 acres that hold the administrative offices of the county sheriff. Read More. |
