The director of a western Mexico prison said last Sunday that some inmates appear to be selling conjugal visits to other prisoners, the government news agency Notimex reported. Mexican law allows most prisoners to get weekly conjugal visits from a designated person -- rules discourage prostitution -- but prison director Alfonso Rico Curiel said some visits planned for one inmate, but were in fact attended by another. Rico Curiel, who heads the state prison in Morelia, the capital of western Michoacan state, said there was evidence that inmates were paying as much as 500 pesos (US$45) to take another prisoner's conjugal visit. "It's practically impossible to keep an eye on the visits of 1,049 inmates," said Rico Curiel. "There are no prostitutes coming in from outside, because anybody coming in has to have my written authorization," he said. "They have to leave identification and specify which inmate they want to see." |
