The search for an escaped inmate from the Luna County Detention Center continued Wednesday, four days after three men escaped. Two were recaptured early Monday morning, but the search for Mario Martinez-Rios, 30, continued Wednesday. Following the escape, Luna County officials were looking at the detention center and exploring upgrades to security. The three escapees are federal inmates, each in the country illegally, and were being held at the LCDC under a contract between Luna County and the U.S. Marshals Service. The USMS reported Martinez-Rios has a criminal history with numerous drug possession charges, a felony assault and a driving under the influence charge from 2003. The USMS, which earlier said people should be diligent in being aware of their surroundings and of those around them, now reports in a release from Deputy U.S. Marshal Ben Segotta, "Martinez-Rios is considered a danger to the community, and the United States Marshals Service is still actively investigating all possible leads in New Mexico, Colorado and the country of Mexico. He is described as a native of Chihuahua, Mexico, 5-foot-8, 173 pounds, with brown eyes and black hair. His skintone is described as "medium" by the USMS. "The Marshals Service considers Martinez-Rios' apprehension a top priority and will continue to dedicate man power and resources until Martinez-Rios is caught and presented before a Federal Court." Fellow escapees Alberto Grijalba-Murillo, 39, and Julio Mendoza-Acosta, 50, were recaptured early Monday when a Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine helicopter crew spotted them hiding west of the detention center. Grijalba-Murillo and Mendoza-Acosta had also been charged with possession of marijuana. Wednesday, in U.S. District Court in Las Cruces, they made initial appearances on escape charges. Detention hearings will be scheduled on those charges. A 3:30 p.m. meeting today of the Luna County Board of Commissioners includes an item on the Luna County Detention Center. The commission meets in the basement of the county courthouse, 700 S. Silver Ave. "We've got some work to do," County Manager John Sutherland said Wednesday of tightening security at the LCDC. "We talked about personnel yesterday (Tuesday). John (Krehbiel, warden) and Lionel (Lozano, chief) were here. We talked about personnel, how the facility is built. "These guys escaped from the containment farm (behind the facility)." Read More. |
