Steven Dale Robb of Great Falls, an inmate at the Montana State Prison in Deer Lodge, escaped on Tuesday morning.

Robb drove away in a prison-owned vehicle, a blue flatbed truck with license plate number MSP344.

"It's not unusual. They drive in a prison vehicle and work on the ranch, and we believe he took off in that vehicle," Moodry said Tuesday morning.

Robb lived in the work re-entry center on the prison property and was working outside of the fenced area on Tuesday morning, Moodry said.

Robb has been convicted several times for crimes in Cascade County, including aggravated felony assault, burglary, criminal distribution of dangerous drugs, and theft.

According to the Montana Department of Corrections, Robb is 47 years old, white, stands 5'11", weighs 180 pounds, has brown hair and green eyes, and numerous tattoos, including a Tasmanian devil, flowers, a knife, blood drops, a cross, a castle, and a unicorn (more).

If you have any information about Robb's location or activities, call your local law enforcement agency or 911.

A Great Falls man says the criminal justice system failed him after he discovered his children were being physically abused.

Steven Robb took the law into his own hands, and now is paying the price.

He now works in the kitchen of the Cascade County Detention Center.

As he mixes batter for cornbread, he has mixed emotions about why he is here.

In 1997, while in jail for a different offense, Robb discovered his children were being physically abused by his ex-wife's live-in boyfriend.

Steven Robb :"Two weeks before I bailed out, I went down to the Deaconess Medical Center and I saw my oldest son with a black eye. The deputies didn't report it, they said I had to...so I made a couple of phone calls and reported it."

The abuse continued, as Robb continued stints in and out of jail.

A self-proclaimed drug addict and spouse abuser, Robb admits he's made a lot of mistakes in the past. Those mistakes made it difficult to keep an eye on his children's welfare.

He continued to report suspected abuse while in and out of jail...from bruises to duct tape residue on the arms and legs of his kids; those reports went largely unheeded.

Steven: 'It was really starting to drive me crazy." He continued, "I went by the school, and I saw my son Jeremy and he told me 'Daddy, Chuck hurt me.' This was the second time he's said that to me and that's where I drew the line."

"One night, I went into the house. Chuck came out with a baseball bat and that was it, the fight was on." As a result, Steven's parole was violated.

He pled guilty to aggravated assault...signed a plea agreement for 20 years...five suspended...but the district court judge gave him the full 20 years, saying Robb's long criminal history made him a threat to society.

Robb acknowledges he's made several mistakes through the years...but this time, he says it's the criminal justice system making the mistake.
