After a juvenile inmate escaped Tuesday night from the Marion County Jail — his second escape in just over a month — a corrections officer was suspended without pay and sheriff’s Maj. Paul Laxton was ousted from overseeing the Corrections Division.

Yarnel R. Bagley, 17, escaped from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office Youth Detention area on March 10 and was captured a week later. On Tuesday, he escaped from a section of the jail where juveniles being charged as adults are held.

Late Wednesday, Bagley remained at large.

The corrections officer, who was not named by officials, was suspended without pay pending the outcome of an Internal Affairs investigation.

“It’s an unfortunate incident that should not have happened,” said sheriff’s Chief of Staff Tom Wilder, head of the Corrections and Support Group.

Wilder said the reassignment of Laxton — who he says has an “impeccable record as a jail administrator” — to administrative duties within the Cost Reduction Team was not meant as a punishment, but more “to send a message that these types of errors can’t be tolerated.”

Capt. John Vowinkel was promoted to major and has been assigned to run the jail.

Wilder said Bagley was in the bathroom between 10:30 and 10:45 p.m. The chief speculated Bagley made his way to the recreation yard and escaped through a chain-link portion of an enclosed area.

The teen ran to the front of the Sheriff’s Office complex, where he was spotted by a corrections supervisor. At the time, the official did not know who he was, only that he had on red pants and no shirt.

The official yelled at the teen, who took off running toward the front gate, which leads to Northwest 30th Avenue, officials said.
