Correction unions eyed in alleged harassment

In a sign of increasing tension between the union representing state prison officers and prison managers, Department of Correction Commissioner Kathleen M. Dennehy last week launched an investigation into alleged union harassment of an officer who volunteered for a security detail at the Democratic National Convention.
Dennehy, accusing the 4,000-member union of fostering an atmosphere of intimidation, said in an interview that she would hold accountable any union member trying to intimidate others. She said her office is investigating ''harassing calls" received by one officer at home and on his cellphone after he agreed to work at the convention.
The showdown between Dennehy and the union began last month when union president Steve Kenneway defied management by telling members of the corrections tactical team to stay away from the convention. Kenneway cited solidarity with the Boston Police Patrolmen's Association, which was then picketing the convention site in its dispute over a new contract.
While the Boston police contract was settled last week in binding arbitration, Kenneway said last week that he is moving ahead with the expulsion of the 112 corrections officers who ignored the union directive by signing up to work overtime outside the FleetCenter.
About a half-dozen tactical officers resigned from the team rather than agree to work at the convention. Expelled union members continue to pay dues, but are barred from participating in union activities.
