KINGSTON, Ont. - Joyceville Institution is locked down after a "major disturbance" broke out Sunday morning, resulting in eight inmates being taken to hospital. At approximately 8:50 a.m., correctional officers observed an altercation involving several convicts in the recreation area, according to corrections officials. Orders were give to stop immediately and when inmates didn't respond, chemical agents were deployed, according to assistant warden Lorrie Oddie. Kingston Fire and Rescue responded to a 911 call around 9:26 a.m., but firefighters were not allowed entry. They remained on standby outside the prison gates until 1:05 p.m. A reporter on the scene saw seven ambulances positioned inside the prison gates, at the front of the institution. As the ambulances idled, corrections vehicles patrolled the perimeter of the building. Audible shouting and swearing could be heard outside the prison, before the reporter was told to leave the premises. The eight offenders were later taken to an outside hospital, one of whom sustained serious injuries and is currently in intensive care. "He sustained stab wounds," Oddie said, adding the other seven inmates are being treated for minor injuries. Names of the inmates hospitalized have not been released. "What normally happens is we would notify the next of kin when there are serious injuries, so I think we're in the process of doing that right now," Oddie said. Read More. |
