SUFFOLK COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT K-9 UNIT TEAMS WITH LOCAL POLICE The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department recently joined with members of the Lynn and Milton Police Departments in separate operations designed to provide local students with a safe and healthy environment for learning. Partnering with the Lynn Police Department (LPD) to conduct School Safety Checks for three public middle schools in the area, members of the Sheriff’s Department K-9 Division traveled to Lynn to aid in performing narcotics and explosives detection sweeps through the hallways of the schools. As stated by the LPD, “the objective of the program - now in its third year - is to assist in keeping the Lynn public schools safe, orderly and drug free while reinforcing the message to students that illicit drugs and weapons will not be tolerated.” During the sweeps, K-9 teams discovered several bags of marijuana within a school locker, prompting the arrest of a middle school student who was later charged with possession of a Class D substance with intent to distribute in a school zone. The locker was searched only after two detection dogs indicated in separate instances for the location, as per the established search protocol. The K-9 Division also aided in a similar, separate School Safety Check for Milton High School. For the Department’s involvement in both operations, members of the Lynn Police Department, the Milton Police Department and Lynn Public Schools offered their gratitude through letters sent to Suffolk County Sheriff Andrea J. Cabral. “On behalf of the Lynn Police Department and Lynn Public Schools, I would like to express our sincere appreciation to Corporal Robert Connelly, who worked cooperatively with our officers, the Lynn School Department, and other participating agencies,” said Lynn Chief of Police Kevin Coppinger. “As always, we are pleased to work with your Department and thank you for allowing Corporal Connelly to travel to our city to take part in this effort.” “Your K-9 officer Cornell Lewis provided a valuable tactical assist during a recent narcotics sweep of Milton High School,” said Milton Police Chief Richard Wells, Jr. “On behalf of my department and the Milton Public Schools, please accept our gratitude for a job well done.” |
