A Springfield man who was missing from the minimum-security prison in Shirley yesterday is also an independent record producer who believes that life as a prison inmate is a dead end, according to his website. Tamik Kirkland was discovered missing from the Department of Correction prison at 7:35 a.m. yesterday and had not been found as of last night. The 24-year-old was serving up to four years in state prison after his conviction in Hampden Superior Court on weapons offenses, corrections officials said. He arrived in the state corrections system on Nov. 19, 2009, and his first parole eligibility date was Feb. 15, 2012. He was scheduled to finish his sentence on Aug. 16, 2013, according to the corrections department, which said it will push to have Kirkland prosecuted for escape if he is captured. Springfield Police Sergeant John Delaney said Kirkland was also imprisoned in 2003 after being convicted on charges of intent to distribute cocaine and carrying firearms. Delaney identified Kirkland as the same man who bills himself as the recording artist “Matik’’ and as the owner of the independent recording company, Ahnesty Records. On the company’s website, Kirkland writes that he is a Brooklyn native who was raised in Springfield and lists membership in a Springfield-based group, The Mafioso Mobsters, as one of his accomplishments. “All the while trying to break into the industry, Matik was also in the streets, living the lifestyle that mainly leads to death or jail,’’ the biography reads. “Unfortunately while Mafioso was on the rise Matik ended up having to spend some time in jail.’’ The website does not detail the crime that led to the prison sentence. However, Kirkland’s biography notes that he learned, while behind bars, that life as a prison inmate was a dead end. He became a father and launched Ahnesty Records to start a new direction his life.
