COUNTY PURSUES JAIL ON PROBLEMATIC SITE Flood plain, air show among issues with $5M property As Monterey County agencies face millions in budget cuts, officials continue to pursue the $5 million purchase of a problematic site for an all-but-doomed new jail. The complex deal was hastily arranged when former Sheriff Mike Kanalakis thought the county might obtain state funds to build a jail on farmland south of Salinas. Since then, officials say, prospects for funding the new facility appear dim, and they acknowledge that other obstacles remain unresolved. But county staff members say optioning the property — in which Kanalakis' former campaign treasurer has a stake — is still a priority. County administrator Lew Bauman said his staff is still considering the site as a possible jail location "for a number of reasons." "It's outside of a residential area, it's close enough to have access to the courts, and it's possible to minimize visual impact," he said. He added that "a county is an entity that lives in perpetuity," and acquiring property can be a prudent investment for the future. But Sheriff Scott Miller said the site, near Salinas Municipal Airport, wasn't mentioned when he recently asked Bauman which locations the county is considering for jail expansion.
