A Northampton County (Pa.) Prison inmate sued the prison and prison officials last Wednesday for injuries he suffered when a desk collapsed in his cell. According to the suit, inmate William Epperson was writing a letter Oct. 16, 2003, when his desk/chair combination unit tipped over, and Epperson fell headfirst into a steel toilet. Epperson injured his head, back, ribs, spine and arm in the tumble, according to the suit filed by attorney Gary Asteak. Asteak blames the prison for not bolting the desk/chair unit to the floor and for not warning the prisoner of the potential danger of using the unit. Epperson was housed in cell No. 1 in the prison gallery at the time of the incident, the suit says. The suit names Northampton County Prison, former Director of Corrections James Smith and current Director of Corrections Todd Buskirk as defendants. Buskirk said he could not comment because he had not seen the suit. |
