AKDOC announces Alaska Prisoner Reentry Task Force
By AKDOC
Published: 04/29/2011

JUNEAU –It costs $138 daily to house an inmate in Alaska, which is growing its inmate population at rate that outpaces all but 10 states. According to a recently-released study by the Pew Center on the States, more than half of Alaska inmates released during 2004 returned to prison within three years. As of 2009, 1 in 36 Alaskans were under the jurisdiction of the department.

For these reasons, the Criminal Justice Work Group, with the endorsement of Governor Sean Parnell, created the Alaska Prisoner Reentry Task Force. To provide a roadmap, the Task Force created Alaska’s first Five-Year Prisoner Reentry Strategic Plan to identify best-practice strategies to improve former prisoners’ successful community reintegration.

The Five-Year Reentry Plan will be presented to the public at 10 am Thursday, May 5 at the Mountain View Diner in Anchorage. There will be brief statements from Carmen Gutierrez, Chair of the Alaska Prisoner Reentry Task Force and Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Corrections, Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan and Chief Mark Mew of the Anchorage Police Department.

In addition, a former prisoner who has successfully returned to the community will speak about his experiences and challenges. This former prisoner has agreed to speak provided his name is not used and that his employer is not identified. Follow-up questions regarding this individual will be accepted by Deputy Commissioner Gutierrez.

Task force members include leaders from the Alaska Court System, Alaska Judicial Council, Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority, Alaska State Troopers, Department of Health and Social Services, Nine Star Education and Employment Services, Partners for Progress, Cook Inlet Tribal Council, Alaska Native Justice Center, Victims for Justice, United Way of Anchorage and others. Task Force members will be available to answer questions.
