Inmate attempts escape in trash bags |

It's a chore that is repeated all day long at the Clay County Jail in Florida. The trash bags fill up - and with and officer in tow - an inmate takes them out. Clay County Sheriff's Deputies say this mundane ritual helped Emmanuel Soriano, 22, hatch a plan. They say he combined six trash bags and asked other inmates to take him out as trash to the dumpster. Police documents show Soriano had asked other inmates for a ride. At least one of those inmates came forward to corrections officers. The officers were watching when Soriano reportedly started his escape Tuesday. Captain Jim Messer could see the whole plan unfold from inside the D-Wing's control room. They moved in when he reportedly tried to climb in the bags. As to how the armed robbery suspect thought a lone inmate could lob his body weight into the trash - all while an officer watches - Captain Messer is not all that surprised. "We don't have Harvard graduates in our jail. So they're not thinking ahead too much." If Soriano is convicted of the escape attempt he faces an additional five years in state prison. |
