The state has replaced the superintendent, two deputy superintendents and the major of the guard at the state prison in Woods Run, where eight guards recently have been suspended.

"Beginning today, there is a new leadership team in place that will take SCI Pittsburgh in a new direction," acting Corrections Secretary John Wetzel said in a press release announcing the changes.

Susan McNaughton, spokeswoman for the Department of Corrections, said she couldn`t confirm whether the personnel changes were tied to an agency investigation that has resulted in the suspensions of eight corrections officers at the facility. She did confirm that former Superintendent Melvin Lockett and the other people replaced are no longer employees of the agency.

"That`s all I can tell you," she said.

Lockett declined comment.

Union officials said previously that the agency has not told them why one guard was suspended in January and another seven were suspended about a month ago. A union official couldn`t immediately be reached for comment.

Wetzel said Louis Folino, superintendent of SCI-Greene, a maximum security prison, is the new superintendent at SCI-Pittsburgh.

"Lou is a dedicated professional with a proven record of achievement in assuming increasing levels of responsibility," Wetzel said. "He recently was named warden of the year by the North American Association of Wardens and Superintendents."
