Thurston County and the Department of Corrections have planned an open house Wednesday in Rochester to discuss potential environmental impacts if a proposed state prison reception center is located at the Maple Lane School site. The event will start at 6 p.m. at the Rochester High School Commons, 19800 Carper Road S.W. According to the county: The Maple Lane School site on Old Highway 9 is one of three locations under consideration by the Department of Corrections (DOC) for a reception center to temporarily house new inmates for evaluation before transfer to a state prison. The other sites under consideration are near Bremerton and in Mason County. The DOC is preparing an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the project. Potential areas for discussion include air and water quality, environmental health, noise, land use, aesthetics, historic and cultural resources, public services and economic impacts. Read More. |
