EASTON | Corrections officers corralled a Northampton County Prison inmate who is facing the death penalty after he tried climbing a prison fence Tuesday but was thwarted by razor wire, officials said. John McGlinchey III, 46, of Nockamixon Township, "got tangled in razor ribbon" and was apprehended Tuesday afternoon, said County Executive John Stoffa. Guards quickly restrained McGlinchey, and he never made it outside the Easton facility, said prison Director Robert Meyers. McGlinchey's attempt came near the end of his outdoor time in the exercise yard, Meyers said. As other inmates were called back into the prison, McGlinchey scrambled up a fence, Meyers said. "I can't imagine anybody getting through this razor wire," Stoffa said Wednesday. Anthony Eggleston, a corrections officer for four years, brought McGlinchey under control, Meyers said, while another officer, Donald Snyder, an officer for three and a half years, radioed for backup and assisted Eggleston. "The officers' response and control was outstanding," Meyers said. Meyers said he expects that McGlinchey will be charged with attempted escape. McGlinchey's attorney, Dwight Danser, said he has not yet spoken with McGlinchey and did not wish to comment. The jail was locked down while officials did a head count, Stoffa said. Read More. |
