Escape is short-lived for 3 Texas inmates

Three Hardin County, Texas, Jail inmates, who escaped through a ceiling ventilation duct using a toothbrush handle and a piece of metal, were back in custody Sunday after a two-day search.
Hardin County Chief Deputy Kenny Davenport said the three were able to use the tool to saw through a metal grate early Saturday.
"It was really a crude little tool. We don't even know what this metal piece came off of," Davenport said. "It was a solid metal grate he sawed through."
Jail officials plan to inspect the metal grates and reinforce some of them today, he said.
"They are pretty sturdy as it is," Davenport said. "This is the first time they have exited through that way."
One inmate was caught shortly after he got out of the jail when a deputy spotted him jumping from the courthouse roof. The other two inmates scattered.
Police caught up with Allan Lawrence Shelby, 37, Sunday at a grocery store in Seguin, about 36 miles outside of San Antonio.
Davenport said Seguin officers received information Shelby might be in the area and located him in the back of the grocery store, hiding behind a container. When officers approached with their guns drawn, Shelby surrendered, he said.
The third inmate, Daniel Martinez, 26, who like Shelby was being held on federal drug charges, was caught Sunday in Grapeland, about 120 miles northwest of Kountze.
Davenport said Martinez was stopped by the Texas Department of Public Safety for speeding and gave troopers the wrong name.
He was found driving a vehicle that had been stolen from Zavalla, about 60 miles north of Kountze, where Martinez was thought to have stolen another vehicle before abandoning it in Zavalla.
The Texas Rangers, Port Arthur police and officers from the Stiles and Hightower prison units assisted in the search.
