Pike County Correctional Officer of the Year Awarded |

Correction officers don't bang a stick on the bars as they walk past locked cells. That's a common misconception, said Pike County Correctional Facility Warden Craig Lowe. Responsible for up to 67 inmates at a time, correction officers are locked in the unit with inmates. The job requires strong communications skills, Lowe said. That is exactly what Pierre Delaplace has. Delaplace was named Pike County Correctional Facility's Correctional Officer of the Year. He was nominated by Lt. Todd Schweyer for being an adaptable multi-tasker who promotes positive relationships. Delaplace has worked at the facility for 10 years and says the best day on the job was when he earned the award, which comes with a check for $200. A challenging day was when he worked in central control and was in charge of opening all the doors in the facility as needed. At the same time he had to answer the phones and communicate with people on the radio. It was tough to keep up with all the traffic inside the busy prison, he said. Delaplace takes his lunch at the correctional cafeteria where his favorite menu pick is french fries, although that could change.
