A second inmate has committed suicide at Lee County, Fla., jail in a week, officials said. Andrew Franzone, 42, of Cape Coral, was found Sunday in his cell hanging from the top bunk from jail-issued towels. He was charged with giving false identification and had a warrant for failure to appear in court. Last Monday another inmate, Liborio Villeda, 27, of Bonita Springs, hanged himself in a cell using a bedsheet. Neither man was on suicide watch and officials said they have no indication the deaths were related, said Lee County Sheriff's Chief David Bonsall. There have been nine suicides in Lee County jails since 1985. Before last week, the last suicide was in 1996. Franzone, who has a 5-year-old son, was jailed Saturday. He shared a cell with other inmates, but they could have been in a common area when he died, Bonsall said. In Brevard County, several jail administrators were suspended after a rash of five suicides in four months. |
