MA House reinstates prison mitigation money

NORFOLK - The Massachusetts House has restored long-missed prison mitigation money in its version of the state budget, state Rep. Dan Winslow says.

Winslow, R-Norfolk, informed town meeting of the development this week, but cautioned the money still needs to remain in the Senate version of the spending plan.

"It's the first time in several years we were able to reinstate prison mitigation money," Winslow said. "We'll keep our fingers crossed they will keep it in the Senate budget."

Norfolk had received about $300,000 a year for providing services for state prisons in town, but that money was gradually cut back and the town has received nothing the past few years.

The money had been used for local building and equipment expenses, capital needs on both the school and town sides that are escalating, Town Administrator Jack Hathaway said. "All the departments are in dire need of capital," he said. "It would be great to see that come back," he said of the prison funds.

For the only capital item request on the town meeting warrant Tuesday, voters approved borrowing $90,000 for two badly needed police cruisers.

Borrowing was the only funding option, the advisory board said.

"We need to get them on the road as soon as possible," Police Chief Charles Stone said. "The miles are going crazy. We're spending a lot of money on repairs."
