Merced County has to cut 20% of it's budget to help make up for a $20 million budget shortfall. Closing the main jail in Merced would save the county $8 million. That means 20 correctional officers could get laid off and 150 to 200 inmates could be released early. Mark Pazin, the Merced County Sheriff says"if this proposal is accepted, it's going to be like a haunted house here." The type of inmates that would be released early are non violent, non sex offender and non serious. The others would be sent to either to John Latorraca Correctional Center or to the state prison. Also, all 15 part time correctional officers will be laid off by July 1st. The proposed budget is due June 28th. Inmates could start getting released as early as this summer Click here to read more: |
