Horizon Center to Re-open: South End program will serve similar purpose, managed by Boston-based Community Resources for Justice

Boston – May 11, 2011

Community Resources for Justice of Boston will re-open Horizon Center, a South End halfway house for federal offenders, in early September, CEO John Larivee announced today.

“We look forward to bringing to Albany the same successful approach to preparing federal offenders for successful lives that we’ve developed in Massachusetts and New Hampshire,” Larivee said.

CRJ’s Horizon Center will provide pre-release supervision to 32 men and women in the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons who are completing their sentences and preparing to return to the community. Counseling and job readiness will be a major focus, Larivee said.

Horizon Center represents CRJ’s third contract with the Bureau of Prisons. The program will be modeled on CRJ’s existing programs: Coolidge House and McGrath House in Boston, and Hampshire House in Manchester, NH.

Common Councilor Lester Freeman said the program will have to prove itself but expressed satisfaction with CRJ’s approach.

“So far, I’ve been satisfied with the way that Community Resources for Justice has communicated with the neighborhood,” Freeman said, “I’m pleased they have plans to improve the building, and while we wait and see how the program does, we’ll insist on openness and accountability,” he said.

Renovations to the building at 28 Elizabeth Street and hiring of staff will take place over the summer months. The anticipated start date is September 1st.

Community Resources for Justice (CRJ) is a Boston-based not-for-profit provider of programs for adults and juveniles in the justice system, at-risk youth, and adults with developmental disabilities who need intensive support to live in the community. Its programs earn consistently high accreditation marks and it is a renowned source of policy analysis and recommendations as well. Its Crime and Justice Institute consults with state governments across the country on evidence-based approaches to reducing recidivism and creating effective community corrections systems.
