| Two industry leaders recognized with national award |

Cheyenne – Two Wyoming Department of Corrections employees received a national level award from the National Correctional Industries Association for their excellence in the career field. Dr. Heidi Atwood, WY Brand Industries site manager at Wyoming Women’s Center in Lusk, and Lucinda Cobia, garment factory manager at Wyoming State Penitentiary in Rawlins, were selected for the 2011 National Correctional Industries Association Staff Awards. The Staff Award recognizes the superior performance and supervisory excellence of a correctional industries staff member who has made a significant and sustained contribution to a correctional industries program. Atwood and Cobia, who are both WY Brand Industries supervisors, were presented the award at the recent Correctional Industries Advisory Board meeting at Wyoming Women’s Center in Lusk. Both also made the National Correctional Industries Association Honor Roll for 2011. Lucinda Cobia was nominated and selected for assuming the supervision of the garment factory at the Wyoming State Penitentiary in Rawlins shortly after an extensive order for garments for the opening of the new Wyoming Medium Correctional Institution had been contracted by the facility. Cobia trained a workforce of 55 inmates, produced all 600 plus inmate uniforms for the new facility and her efforts resulted in 100 percent delivery on-time with a 99 percent positive feedback on the quality of the products produced. Prior to working in the Garment Factory, Cobia was the supervisor of the print shop at the Wyoming State Penitentiary. Her nomination and selection also took into account her ten years of exemplary WY Brand Industries supervisory experience and job development for inmate workers in the print shop and garment factory. Atwood was nominated and selected for her recognition of an immediate need for additional work opportunities at the Women’s Center. Atwood focused her efforts and leadership on expanding the industries programs to include an aquaculture program, laundry, specialty sewing, quilt factory, a refurbishing shop and a Wyoming Green Cartridge operation. The Green Cartridge operation is a program that instructs and employs inmates to refurbish ink cartridges for printers and is an environmentally “green” operational shop as well. As a result of her vision and dedication to finding jobs for inmates inmate jobs doubled. The nomination is based on the accumulations of Dr. Atwood's achievements over the last three plus years. WY Brand Industries is a division of the Wyoming Department of Corrections. It provides career opportunities for offenders to develop job skills and good work habits through businesses that produce quality products and services for governmental agencies, non-profit organizations and private sector customers. |
