MILLARD — A program that allows inmates at the Pearl River County prison to graduate with a GED high school equivalency certificate continues to turn out inmates who are trying to turn around their lives and get on the right track, said Maj. Julie Flowers, jail administrator.

The program, undertaken in a joint effort by the county with the help and assistance of Pearl River Community College rehabilitation and educational personnel, at one time graduated a class with as many as 23.

Wednesday’s graduation ceremonies were for eight, but for those who were graduating, the program is a great success and an opportunity to start anew.

Some of the inmates, too, are under court order to get a GED before being released.

Seven of the eight showed up to receive their certificates and the PRCC staff was on-hand as well, as was Sheriff David Allison and Chief Deputy Sheriff Shane Tucker.

Those receiving degrees were Chad Alexander, Joseph Faye, Joseph Simonek, Joseph Hartfield, Marshall Jones, Leon Washington, Nathaniel Jackson, Jr., and Raymond Fairchild.

PRCC personnel present were Tonia Moody, director of recruitment and disability services; Dr. Barbara Gandy, director of retention and adult learning services; Barry Upton, director of adult education; Craig Carrigee, GED instructor; and Terri Ward, GED counselor.

Seven of the eight that received certificates donned caps and gowns, received their degrees and posed for pictures, and then enjoyed a lunch of pizza as faculty and graduates mingled and exchanged congratulations.

Instruction is done at the prison.
