Male sexual assault in Australian prisons is a serious and under-reported problem, suggests ABC1’s youth-skewed current affairs show Hungry Beast. Prison officials insist the problem is rare, but testimonies the show’s reporters received indicate the issue is more widespread than is ever officially acknowledged. “Estimates on the sexual assault rate inside Australia’s prisons range from 2-14%,” Hungry Beast points out. “But the truth is, we don’t really know, because most of our various state-based Corrective Services Departments don’t ask. And even when they do, most prisoners are too scared to report it.” Brisbane-based GP and Counsellor – and Same Same 25er – Dr. Wendell Rosevear has worked with victims and perpetrators of prison rape through his 30-year career.
