A cell unit at the Minnesota Correctional Facility at Stillwater was locked down Tuesday after a prison staff member was assaulted by two inmates. The staff member, a lieutenant, was treated at Lakeview Hospital for injuries that were not life threatening, said Dennis Benson, deputy commissioner of corrections. The lieutenant's name was not disclosed and he was expected to be released from the hospital Tuesday night, Benson said. Benson said the assault on a prison staff member "appears to be a somewhat isolated incident." The unit, known as B West, had been locked down for 17 days and had been restored to normal status for only several hours Tuesday before the assault occurred and the unit was locked down again, Benson said. "It will remain on lockdown pending the investigation of the assault," Benson said. Benson attributed some of the unrest in the prison unit to the new practice of placing two inmates in a cell, a procedure known as "double bunking." |
