Thousands of California prisoners could be released. The problem is overcrowding. The U.S. Supreme Sourt ruled Monday that overcrowding means prisoners can't get adequate health care. The ruling does not sit well with many people in the valley already worried about crime and their own health care. Under the ruling, roughly 46,000 inmates could be released, to get the state to the recommended inmate population of 80,000. The Justices argued prison overcrowding leads to needless suffering and death. "I feel a little angry because it is not balanced to the people who are working and trying," said Desert Hot Springs resident Ruth Foltz in reacting to the news. Foltz and her husband James did not show much sympathy for prisoners who don't get all the care they need. With their own health issues, and without any medical coverage, they don't like the fact that their taxes provide some health care for inmates, while they get nothing. "I had a stack of lumber fall on me several months ago and got a whiplash in my neck and it is still there," said James. Governor Brown says his proposed prison "realignment" plan could significantly reduce the number of prisoners released, in part by housing short term offenders in local jails, easing the strain on health care in the state system. Other improvements could include housing the inmates who need the most medical attention at specific prisons, making it less costly to care for them according to the Department of Corrections. Still, that is not much consolation for the Foltzs. Read More. |
