DEDHAM, MA, May 24, 2011 – Norfolk County Sheriff Michael Bellotti’s high school equivalency diploma program recently graduated its 600th inmate since Bellotti instituted the program seven years ago at the Norfolk County Correctional Center. “We have a 91 percent passage rate among inmates taking the high school equivalency diploma test. That is a tribute to our great staff of teachers in our Educational Programs department,” Sheriff Bellotti said. The graduate equivalency diploma (GED) classes at the Dedham correctional facility are part of a series of courses that include English-as-a-second language and also feature occupational education in the areas of culinary, HVAC and landscaping. Sheriff Bellotti said the classes help inmates land jobs when they leave the jail and return to their communities. “We place a high priority on inmate re-entry into society. Our philosophy is that if you can help an inmate be successful once he finishes his incarceration, you reduce crime and make our communities safer for everyone,” Sheriff Bellotti said. |
