Deep Cuts For Corrections Department |

Deep cuts are in store for the state's corrections budget. About 70 million dollars is slated to be cut from the department's 2 billion dollar budget. It's unclear how many jobs may be lost, or which, if any, more prisons will close. Some lawmakers say it's a huge step in reducing wasteful spending. Corrections officers say the plan will put them in danger. The corrections budget gets more general fund dollars than anything else. Sen. John Proos, (R) 21st district: "The Department of Corrections in the State of Michigan is one of the largest on a per prisoner, per day basis when compared to other states around the Midwest." But lawmakers have a plan to cut it down. State Senator John Proos, who sponsored the bill, says one of the main components includes allowing the state to bid for services. Sen. John Proos: "That competition helps to drive down those costs that ultimately get the most taxpayer value." But that's not how Mel Greishaber sees it. He represents the Corrections Officers Union and says privatizing any services inside prisons is simply dangerous.
