Cheyenne – Wyoming Department of Corrections Director Bob Lampert has announced that two of Wyoming’s correctional facility leaders have achieved national certification. Phil Myer, Warden at the Wyoming Women’s Center (WWC), and Martha Decker, Associate Warden at WWC, have both completed training and passed the rigorous requirements and testing to achieve American Corrections Association (ACA) Certified Corrections Executive (CCE) status. Myer has 33 years of correctional experience with four of those years of tenure at the Wyoming Women's Center. Decker has over 20 years of tenure with the department and has been at the Women's Center since 2006. Myer and Decker continue a strong tradition in the Wyoming Department of Corrections of achieving national certification to provide excellence in leadership and management. All of Wyoming’s Wardens and Associate/Deputy Wardens are certified nationally or in the process of completing certification. “The ACA certification process requires dedication, commitment, and perseverance to achieve,” Lampert said. “The study guide and material only scratches the surface of the knowledge they both have achieved in preparation for the exam, as well as what they have learned through their years of experience.” “Their efforts have culminated in a notable achievement and I commend their efforts,” he said. In addition to Myer’s and Decker’s certification, the ACA announced that WDOC Director Lmapert has been recertified in CCE as well. Recertification requires the completion of a minimum of 100 continuing education contact hours. “This type of commitment to continuously update one’s skills epitomizes professionalism in the corrections field,” ACA Corrections Certification Program Manager Peg O’Brien said. “The American Correctional Association Certification Program, itself, is designed to advocate for the field of corrections. It promotes the capabilities of correctional professionals to the general public in order to enhance society’s image of corrections personnel.” The ACA coordinates, manages and awards certification in a number of correctional professional areas such as caseworkers, correctional officer ranks, program managers and medical staff. Certification provides a nationally recognized level of excellence and knowledge for an individual in their correctional professional level. The certification process is part of a broader goal of achieving full accreditation for all Wyoming correctional and field service facilities and offices. Accreditation is a system of verification that correctional agencies/facilities comply with national standards promulgated by the American Correctional Association. Accreditation is achieved through a series of reviews, evaluations, audits and hearings and is based on ACA standards. ACA standards are the national benchmark for the effective operation of correctional systems throughout the United States and are necessary to ensure that correctional facilities are operated professionally. They address services, programs and operations essential to good correctional management. The American Correction Association is the oldest and largest international correctional association in the world. ACA serves all disciplines within the corrections profession and is dedicated to excellence in every aspect of the field. Also included are programs and facilities operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons and the private sector. |
